Since I talked down about petit Francais in my last review (Anais in Love), I’ve got to hand it to writer/director Safy Nebbou for the 2019 flick “Who you Think I Am” available now on Amazon. Mind you, the film was adapted from a book by Camille Laurens and Safy chose the best living middle aged French actress (Juliette Binoche) to take on this nearly one woman production. Sure, there a few minor characters; Nicole Garcia as therapist and Francois Civil, as toy boy, but the bulk of the film is Juliette Binoche acting and talking her gorgeous head off.
What I found most intriguing about this film is the leap of faith I took in continuing passed the half way mark. I abhor May December romances where the female is December; my reasons are many, I’m a traditionalist, a mother to a son, and witness to a gross relationship during my teaching years…and considering that’s the main plot of Who You Think I Am, I almost folded like a towel.
But to Juliette’s credit, I hung in there, and sure enough, while my opinion didn’t flip on my cougar aversion, I did really enjoy the plot twists which, as a upstanding critic, I will not spoil. If you like Juliette or erotic thrillers, this one is worth the watch.
And I now have two reasons to watch The Staircase on HBO as Juliette and another favorite of mine, Parker Posey, co-star.
