On the cusp of Hurricane Ian, I took in Moonage Daydream last Saturday @Sarasotafilmsociety whuch was written and directed by Brett Morgen who magnificently rendered the producer Robert Evan’s life in The Kid Stays in the Picture.
Not hip to Morgen’s organization at first (was that him or me? Granted I had run 4 miles, stood on my feet 6 & then had dinner & an adult beverage) but I don’t think the beginning set up any guide for the audience.
No matter, I was ready for the Bowie career arc. Like what troubles he encountered as a youth (no spoilers, see the doc!) and then on to segments of his career; the early trans period years, the large middle of self-torture-Bowie would exile himself to harsh places (walled up Germany to name one) in order to mine the richest music. Finally his post love for Iman period where he just wanted to make people feel good and then finally, back to illness fused skiing outsids the wake experimentation.
The best of the doc are the concert full length songs and the full sound. The least successful is the random images which had they been explained, ie. This is Bowie’s art or this is Morgen’s artistic reaction, I would have felt better informed.
Still, I truly enjoyed this lift off the planet.
