Bros, directed and co-written (with star Billy Eichner) by Nicholas Stoller is a novel and authentic take on gay relationships. Not only that, I believe it is the beginning of normalizing gay relationships. Perhaps a controversial take, but until more of these groundbreaking films are seen, society is going to have to deal with indgnant gay people who feel underrepresented and unappreciated.
Best of all, this is a movie with real experiences that even heteros can relate to; awkward family dinners, putting emotional fear walls up to protect yourself, how to be your true self without being rejected by a partner, how to ask for and navigate monogamy. And maybe most importantly, how to accept everyone’s needs and desires, yet not having to be exactly alike.
Bros is truly written with a proper character arc, great acting AND it’s entertaining. The theme or point being that relationships are crazy and they are also necessary, so why not make them funny? If we can’t laugh at ourselves and each other, we truly are dead in the water. Billy Eichner (who I LOVE as Billy on the Streets) has proven all of this can be taken to the big screen. BRAVO!
