I’m dying to get the rotten taste out of my eyes, ears and mouth of two super lazy movies in a row. I won’t waste much of my precious time on Earth on these two clunkers, but will spell out what was the angle and the failure of each as concisely as I can.
Mafia Mamma: Catherine Hartwick had been told several times that men should make action films. In fact, she was in a doc called “Half the Picture” bemoaning women being put in the backseat in the film industry. Mafia Mamma should have been, “I’ll show you”, but she wasted it on a junk story (Sorry Amanda Sthers, Debbie Jhoon and J Feldman). The worst movie I’ve possibly ever seen. Simply UNfunny and the violence was way too realistic to be in a comedy.
Renfield: I’ve grown to love Nick Cage after his moving portrayal in Pig. His last buddy film was a waste of time, and since I adore (like a MOM) Nicholas Hoult, I thought this would be the bromance of the year. Nope! Not enough of the Nicks together and SO many stupid fight scenes that it drowned out any kind of meaningful story. Shocking but refreshing that my favorite performance in the movie with my Nicks was Ben Schwartz. Now that I look at his IMDB page, let me spin this into a positive: Hey Mr. Schwartz’s agent, Get this man some real parts!
