I’ve moaned before about the lack of participation at film events. Now I get to “praise the chef”. I’m not sure how the sold out crowd heard about The Way (2010, Emilio Estevez Director and Screenwriter), but man, am I happy I was there in a crowd!
The Way is a gorgeous story about a workaholic father (Martin Sheen, Emilio’s actual Dad) who ends up traveling to finish the hike his son was unable to complete. The theme is the ol’ journey is more important than the destination, but is told in a poignant, but just shy of corny, way.
The best part of its re-release was the q & a after with the decade and chage older Sheen, Estevez and Travel Aficionado Rick Steeves. I didn’t know Steeves except for the handful of times, I caught 5 minutes of his PBS travel show and the books we used to carry at BookStore1, but now I know he’s not some pompous travel pimp, he’s a deeply human Christian who cares about people and places as equally sacred.
Best of all, unlike the scaredy cats who usually bolt before live q and a’s, the CineBistro crowd stayed and soaked up the extra community splendor that the after talk added. And once all over, people looked at one another with smiling faces and bliss. Heaven on Earth, if only momentary.
